Our first 14 and under tour to New Zealand proved to be a great success. With a touring party of 31, great cricket was played and new friendships were formed. The tour consisted 5 games and great experiences on our days off. The weather was kind and all matches were completed and enjoyed.
The 10 day tour departed Melbourne International airport on Saturday December 11 and landed in Auckland. After rest and leisure @ the Kiwi International Hotel we set ourselves for game one at Auckland Uni. With rain spoiling the number 1 oval we played in windy conditions in a hard fought match on oval 2. Game 2 was played at Takapuna District cricket club on turf under windy conditions again. The match was played in great spirits over 50 over per team. After the match players and parents enjoyed the Thermal pools and water slides of Walwera Thermal pools. The trip to Rotorua was taken on in the lead up to match 3 vs Western Heights High School. Smallbone Park was a highlight as it presented us with first class conditions.
With 3 games played it was time to take in the sights of Rotorua, firstly at Skyline which featured Gondolas, the dreaded Swing and fantastic views of the country side! We then travelled to the Tamaki Traditional Maori Village which proved to be a great experience for all, poi dancing, welcoming ceremony and learning the Haka were highlights as was the traditional hangi feast! Next morning it was up for Jet boats and free time for all in the afternoon. Our next trip was to Hamilton were we played a close match Vs Western Bay of Plenty. We took in a Super Smash T20 match, Hamilton Zoo and Hamilton Water world. The final game was against the very strong Hamilton Invitational team where we played well with several personal bests.
After 10 days we boarded the Qantas flight back to Australia and were able to reflect on the fantastic cricket experience that had occurred. The New Zealand teams we played could not have nicer to us, afternoon tea's were huge and fed all our tourists, grounds were outstanding and accommodation was great. I was very proud of the boys who often played against boys older then them. I was very played with how everyone played and without speaking individually I was impressed with many of the performances and proud of the team overall.- Shaun Brown
